Do you know about Stop Pressure Ulcer Awareness Day

By: Mölnlycke Health Care, November 16 2012Posted in: Wound Care

This annual day aims to raise awareness of the global burden of pressure ulcers which can not only be physically but also mentally scarring for the patients that suffer from them. Currently a staggering 20-25% of hospital beds are occupied by pressure ulcer patients with 60-80% of these patients developing ulcers after hospital admission1

The cost to treat an individual ulcer ranges (£1,064 - £1,055,112)2, ultimately costing healthcare systems, worldwide, millions each year3,4.

These incurred costs, primarily due to patients with pressure ulcers remaining on average three times longer in care5, are ultimately unnecessary. Experts agree that prevention strategies are vital and there are new recommendations to add dressings to reduce these occurrences and relieve healthcare systems of this avoidable expense.

The Stop Pressure Ulcer Day, founded by The European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel, is aimed at raising awareness about the burden of pressure ulcers and the importance of prevention. Visit the website to learn more: http://www.epuap.org/stop-pressure-ulcer-day.

Alison Johnstone, Clinical Nurse Specialist, says,”I understand that pressure ulcers will never be completely eradicated, but I urge hospitals to reallocate resources to enable risk assessment and to implement preventative measures. There is no question that prevention should be a priority.” Continue to read Alison Johnstones’s testimonial.
