Mepilex® Border Post Op, a new surgical wound dressing with Safetac® technology

By: Mölnlycke Health Care, September 5 2013Posted in: Wound Care

The need for a reliable, surgically safe post-operative wound dressing for both clinical and patient care is nothing new. A solution that addresses this problem - that can handle the tough challenges faced by surgical environments and provide long-term post-op care in the patient’s own home - is long overdue.

Research indicates that up to a third of all orthopaedic open surgery patients treated with conventional dressings develop skin blisters. Mölnlycke Health Care set about designing a product to lower these worrying statistics. The result is Mepilex Border Post Op, a surgical wound dressing based on Safetac technology, superabsorbent fibre pads and finely curved flex-cuts. No less than a post-optimised solution.

Safetac dressings are clinically proven to minimise skin and wound damage, including post-op blistering, which is painful for the patient and can compromise mobility. Patients who have undergone hip or knee replacement surgery must start moving as soon as possible. If stiff and injurious dressings and blisters prevent them from doing so, the consequences could be serious.

Post-operative complications can be reduced by using a dressing with good exudate management properties. Mepilex Border Post-Op is designed to minimise the number of dressing changes - both in the surgery and at home - even when blood and exudate levels are high. It's well known that fewer dressing changes limit the risk of external contamination.

Each Mepilex Border Post-Op dressing offers patients flex technology, i.e. an inter-linking pattern of finely curved 'flex-cuts' pressed into the absorbent pad which allows the dressing to move with the patient while maintaining its clinical qualities. Safetac and the flex pattern of the pad maximise the patients’ ability to move without harming the wound and skin.

The better care and treatment a wound gets, the faster it tends to heal. And it makes sense that the better a dressing can support the patients’ recovery process, the less suffering and complications will result. Healthcare professionals know this, and will naturally turn to products allowing less complicated healing. Valuable resources are then released, creating potential for reducing the long-term overall health costs associated with wound surgery and post-operative treatment.

The outlook for wound care professionals is bright - smart, practical thinking and design allows them to do their jobs even better. And the future for patients with wounds treated with Mepilex Border Post-Op is looking significantly less painful.
